what do Russians eat: soup
Just read a recent issue of a Russian men's magazine and found out an interesting fact. During the summer here (which to me is like a mild winter), Russians refresh themselves with this cold soup made of ice-cold kvass (weird national drink most closely compared to non-alcoholic beer), sausage, cucumbers, onions, boiled eggs and sour cream - just imagine this horrendous concoction!!... And get what they call this "soup" ... They call it "ohkroshka"... pretty difficult to articulate, huh? And now get ready for a translation. "Ohkroshka" means "oh baby"!

Oh, baby, I'm hot! Make me "oh baby"!

The Xmas Ohkroshka song
(Anonymous)
2002-12-17 08:22 am UTC (link)

The Xmas Ohkroshka song

Ring ting tingling too
Come on, it's lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you,
Outside the snow is falling
And friends are calling "Yoo hoo Ohkroshku"
Come on, it's lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you.

Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up,
Let's go, Let's look at the show,
We're riding in a wonderland of snow.
Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up,
It's grand, Just holding your hand,
We're gliding along with a song
Of a wintry fairy land.

Our cheeks are nice and rosy
And comfy cozy are we
We're snuggled up together
Like two birds of a feather would be
Let's take that road before us
And sing a chorus or two
Come on, it's lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you.

There's a birthday party
At the home of Farmer Gray
It'll be the perfect ending a perfect day
We'll be singing the songs
We love to sing without a single stop,
At the fireplace while we watch
The chestnuts pop.

Pop! pop! pop!

There's a happy feeling
Nothing in the world can buy,
When they pass around the vodka
And the Ohkroshka
It'll nearly be like a picture print
By Currier and Ives
These wonderful things are the things
We remember all through our lives!

Just hear those sleigh bells jingling,
Ring ting tingling too
Come on, it's lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you,
Outside the snow is falling
And friends are calling "Yoo hoo Ohkroshku,"

Come on, it's lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you.
Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up,
Let's go, Let's look at the show,
We're riding in a wonderland of snow.

Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up,
It's grand, Just holding your hand,
We're gliding along with a song
Of a wintry fairy land.

Our cheeks are nice and rosy
And comfy cozy are we
We're snuggled up together
Like two birds of a feather would be
Let's take that road before us
And sing a chorus or two
Come on, it's lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you
But never without hoo hooo Ohkroshku!

"Okroshka" has derived from russian word "kroshit'" - "to cut"
And this much tasty, believe...

Oh, yes. And "asphalt" means "haemorrhoids"...;-)

I'd say it tastes more like cheap non-alcoholic wine.

It would be strange for any other continental country, but certainly not for Russia... ;-)

The West has a couple of weird national drinks
which they call "beer". One I think called
something like "ButtWeizer", the other -
"Coors Light".

I tried them once, they had less alcohol
then Russian Kvas, and tasted horrible...

Those Westerners must be really smart
to pay so much money only to find out
it's a non-alcoholic beverage...

Finally the real recipe

Boiled meat (beef) - 1/2 pounds or
boiled bird (hen) - 1/2 pounds
garden radish - 1/2 pounds
fresh cucumbers - 2 medium-sized pieces
cooked eggs - 4 pieces
green onions(bow) - 2 beams
parsley - 2 beams
fennel - 2 beams
mustard (Russian, instead of foreign dung) - 2 dining spoons
salt, sour cream to taste
KWAS - as you wish

U can change kvas on 1 or 3,2% yogurt (kefir). It turns on "Okroshka na kefire"
May add white radish. Than okroshka gets sharp (hot) and a little bitter taste.

Nobody in Russia calls this "soup". Soup in Russia is not like europian, here is more meat and potatoes and other things but it is not okhroshka definetely, in a common conversation.

Kvas is probably best compared to cider, if properly made. It's got quite a kick.

Translation skills aside (you've already been shown that yours pretty much suck), personal tastes vary. I've know very many expats who adored okroshka; on the other hand, I myself don't like it that much.

I suppose, however, occasionally one needs to bring something down to make oneself seem bigger, if only in his own eyes.
